Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. She was only five when her abilities became apparent and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she enrolled in a school specifically for kids who have athletic talents. Coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt made her mark by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everybody's eye immediately, and from that point onwards she was dominating the competition. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's bronze medal in figure skating after a close-fought competition. In a tighter competition the following year, Witt won the medal. Free skaters lost, but she won the gold medal in the mandatory figures and her program was short. Witt was the first female to take home a gold medal in both the men's and women's figure-skating competitions since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success as an acting career, however she returned to her sports to participate in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in the year 1995.
