Adults are humans or animals that have reached their full developmental stage. Adults are a social concept and a legal one within the world of humans. In contrast to a non-adult or "minor" legally adult has reached the age of majority, and therefore is considered an independent, self-sufficient person and dependable. Legal adults can also be described as a major. The general consensus is that the threshold at which an individual can legally become an adult is 18. But, it can differ based on the legal rights and countries and also on the psychological state.

Adulthood refers to the period in the human lifespan when the person is at maturity in terms of both physical and mental growth. The age of adulthood typically begins at an age that is 21. After middle age (starting about 40 years old) then comes older age (around age 60). There are three major phases of adulthood: the early years of the age of adulthood (18 to mid-30s) and middle adulthood (mid-30s until mid-60s) as well as later adulthood (mid-60s up to the point of the time of death). At the beginning stage of adulthood (between 20-40) then our bodies are at their peak of maturity even though our height and weight could increase slightly. In the early years of our lives, we're physically and mentally at the peak. The strength of our muscles, the response timing, the ability to sense and cardiac function are all at their peak.
